需 Xu — Waiting (Nourishment)
Water over Heaven · Sincere Patience · 雲上於天,君子以飲食宴樂
Xu (需) is the fifth hexagram in the I Ching — Water above Heaven. Clouds gather in the sky but have not yet released their rain. This is the archetype of patient waiting, trust in timing, and nourishment through preparation. To receive Xu is to be reminded that sincerity and patience, not force, bring success. The rain will come in its own time.

The Judgment (卦辭)
"需:有孚,光亨,貞吉。利涉大川。"
Waiting. If you are sincere, you have light and success. Perseverance brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water.
The judgment of Xu contains four essential messages:
Yǒu Fú
Sincerity · Inner Truth
Waiting is not passive — it requires genuine inner confidence. Trust that you are on the right path, even when results are not yet visible.
Guāng Hēng
Brilliant Success · Radiant Progress
When sincerity is present, success shines brightly. The light of truth illuminates the path forward.

Crossing the Great Water
When the time is right, bold action is favored. Great undertakings will succeed — but only after proper waiting.
💡 Key Insight: Xu teaches that waiting is not weakness but wisdom. Clouds must gather before rain can fall. The creative force of Heaven (lower trigram ☰) is blocked by Water (upper trigram ☵) — danger lies ahead. The wise person does not rush headlong into danger but waits with inner sincerity until the time is right.
The Six Lines: Stages of Waiting (爻辭)
The six lines of Xu trace a journey of waiting at progressively closer distances to danger — from the open meadow to the very edge of the abyss. Each stage teaches a different lesson about patience and timing.
需于郊,利用恆,無咎
Waiting in the meadow. It furthers one to abide in what endures. No blame.
You are still far from the danger. The meadow (郊) is open and safe. This is the time for maintaining daily routines, steady habits, and long-term commitments. There is no urgency — continue your normal life with constancy. Do not let anxiety about the future disrupt your present.
需于沙,小有言,終吉
Waiting on the sand. There is some gossip. The end brings good fortune.
You have moved closer to the water's edge — the sand by the riverbank. Tension is building and people may talk. There is gossip, criticism, or minor conflict (小有言). But do not be drawn into arguments. Stay centered, and the outcome will be favorable.
需于泥,致寇至
Waiting in the mud. This brings the arrival of the enemy.
You are now at the very edge of the water, stuck in the mud. This is the most dangerous position. You have moved too close to the danger zone, and enemies or problems are drawn to you. Your own impatience has created vulnerability. Extreme caution is needed.
需于血,出自穴
Waiting in blood. Get out of the pit.
You are now in the danger itself. Blood (血) represents wounds and conflict. You have fallen into a pit (穴) — a crisis. But the hexagram says: get out. This is not the time to fight or resist; it is the time to retreat and yield. Accept the situation and withdraw gracefully.
需于酒食,貞吉
Waiting amid food and drink. Perseverance brings good fortune.
This is the ideal position — centered and correct (中正). Even in the midst of waiting, you find nourishment and contentment. Food and drink (酒食) symbolize abundance and well-being. You have found inner peace while waiting. This is the true art of patience: not anxious waiting, but joyful nourishment.
入于穴,有不速之客三人來,敬之終吉
One falls into the pit. Three uninvited guests arrive. Honor them, and in the end there will be good fortune.
The waiting period ends with an unexpected turn. You have fallen into the pit (穴), and three strangers arrive uninvited. These "guests" may represent unexpected challenges, people, or circumstances. The key teaching: receive them with respect and openness. What seems like an intrusion may be a blessing in disguise.
💡 The Lesson of Waiting: The six stages show that our relationship with waiting changes based on our proximity to danger and our inner state. The best waiting is not tense vigilance but calm nourishment (九五). The worst is rushing too close to danger out of impatience (九三). Master the art of waiting, and you master the art of timing.
The Great Image (大象)
"雲上於天,需。君子以飲食宴樂。"
"Clouds rise up to heaven: the image of Waiting. Thus the noble person eats and drinks, is joyous and of good cheer."
This image captures the paradox of Xu: waiting should be a time of nourishment, not anxiety. Clouds gather above heaven — rain is coming, but it has not yet arrived. The noble person (君子) does not stand in the field staring at the sky. Instead, they return home, eat, drink, and enjoy life.
This is a profound teaching about the relationship between patience and well-being. When you cannot control the timing of events, control your own state. Nourish your body with food and drink. Nourish your spirit with joy and fellowship. When the rain finally comes — when the moment for action arrives — you will be refreshed, strong, and ready.
Modern Application
💼 Career
Xu advises patience in career advancement. If you are waiting for a promotion, a new role, or recognition — do not force it. Continue doing excellent work with sincerity (有孚). The right opportunity will come. Rushing will only create problems (九三).
💰 Business
This hexagram favors strategic patience over hasty action. The market may not be ready for your product. Investors may not be convinced yet. Wait for the right timing. Use the waiting period to refine your offering, build relationships, and strengthen your foundation.
❤️ Relationships
Xu can indicate a relationship that requires patience. If you are waiting for someone to commit, to open up, or to change — do not force the issue. Sincerity and genuine care will accomplish what pressure cannot. Nourish the relationship rather than demanding results.
🧘 Personal Growth
This is a time to nourish yourself. Rest, eat well, enjoy life's pleasures. Develop your inner resources. Learn new skills. The clouds are gathering — when the rain comes, you will need your strength. Use this period wisely.
