巽 Xùn — The Gentle
Wind over Wind · Gentle Penetration · 隨風,巽;君子以申命行事
Xùn (巽) is the hexagram of gentle, persistent penetration — wind following wind, doubling the force of subtle influence. Unlike the explosive power of thunder or the overwhelming force of water, wind achieves its purpose by entering every crack, reaching every corner, never confronting directly but never ceasing. Xùn teaches that the greatest transformations come not from dramatic force, but from quiet, sustained, and purposeful persistence — like wind shaping stone over centuries, or a wise leader whose commands spread naturally through the land.

The Judgment (卦辭)
"巽:小亨,利有攸往,利見大人。"
The Gentle. Small success. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. It furthers one to see the great person.
Like the wanderer's judgment, Xùn promises 小亨 — modest success, not grand triumph. The wind does not conquer in a single gust; it prevails through relentless gentle repetition. The judgment tells us two things are favorable: having a clear direction (利有攸往) and seeking wise counsel (利見大人). Without a destination, the wind merely drifts; without guidance, gentleness becomes aimlessness.
Xùn
Gentleness · Penetration · Submission
Enter softly, reach deeply. The wind does not break the door — it finds the gap. In action: use subtlety, not force.
Xiǎo Hēng
Small Success · Gradual Progress
Great achievements come from accumulated small wins. In action: be patient with incremental progress.
Lì Yǒu Yōu Wǎng
A Clear Direction Furthers
Wind without direction is a breeze; wind with purpose is a force of nature. In action: set a goal and persist toward it.
Lì Jiàn Dà Rén
Seek the Great Person
Humility and gentleness work best under wise guidance. In action: find a mentor, follow worthy leadership.
💡 Key Insight: Xùn's power is paradoxical: it achieves through yielding. Water drills through rock not by force but by persistence. Wind shapes landscapes not by collision but by ceaseless motion. When you receive this hexagram, the message is clear: stop trying to break through — start seeping in.
The Wind's Path: Line Statements (爻辭)
The six lines of Xùn trace the spectrum of gentleness — from indecisive wavering, through deep investigation, to excessive submission and ultimate loss. Each line reveals a different face of wind energy: when gentle penetration succeeds, when it falters, and when it goes too far.
進退,利武人之貞。
Advancing and retreating. The perseverance of a warrior furthers.
The wind gusts forward, then falls back — indecision (進退). This is the danger of excessive gentleness: it can become timidity, hesitation, and inability to commit. The remedy is surprising: adopt the discipline of a warrior (武人之貞). Not the warrior's violence, but the warrior's decisiveness. Once you choose a direction, commit to it with iron resolve.
巽在牀下,用史巫紛若,吉,無咎。
Penetration under the bed. Priests and diviners are employed in great number. Good fortune. No blame.
The wind penetrates beneath the bed (牀下) — into the most hidden places, the deepest recesses. This is the energy of thorough investigation: leaving no stone unturned, examining what is hidden from plain view. The use of priests and diviners (史巫) suggests employing every method of inquiry — rational analysis, intuition, specialist counsel. The result is good fortune: when you investigate this deeply, the truth reveals itself.
頻巽,吝。
Repeated penetration. Humiliation.
The wind enters and retreats, enters and retreats — again and again (頻). This is gentle penetration taken to the point of absurdity: repeated attempts without progress, persistent probing that becomes annoying. The result is humiliation (吝). There is a fine line between persistence and pestering, between thoroughness and obsession. When your gentle approach has been rejected multiple times, continuing is not perseverance — it is loss of dignity.
悔亡,田獲三品。
Remorse vanishes. During the hunt, three kinds of game are caught.
A turning point. All regret vanishes (悔亡), and the hunt yields an extraordinary harvest — three kinds of game (三品). This is the moment when gentle persistence finally bears fruit in abundance. The three types of game traditionally represent offerings for the gods, the guests, and the household — meaning your success benefits not just yourself but everyone around you. The key: this abundance comes precisely because you were patient and flexible, not forceful.
貞吉,悔亡,無不利。無初有終。先庚三日,後庚三日,吉。
Perseverance brings good fortune. Remorse vanishes. Nothing that does not further. No beginning, but an end. Before the change, three days. After the change, three days. Good fortune.
The ruler's position — centered and correct (中正). This is the most powerful line: perseverance (貞) yields good fortune, all regret disappears, and nothing is unfavorable. The cryptic phrase "no beginning, but an end" (無初有終) reveals a profound truth: the start was rough, but the conclusion will be perfect. The reference to "three days before and after Gēng" (庚) relates to the cyclical nature of change — prepare thoroughly before acting, and consolidate carefully afterward. Change is coming, and it will be for the better.
巽在牀下,喪其資斧,貞凶。
Penetration under the bed. He loses his property and his axe. Perseverance brings misfortune.
The same image as Line 2 — penetrating under the bed — but with a catastrophic outcome. This time, the investigation goes too far: you lose your property (資, resources) and your axe (斧, the tool of decisive action). This is the final warning of Xùn: excessive submission destroys your ability to act. When gentleness becomes spinelessness, when humility becomes self-erasure, when you bend so low you lose your tools and your wealth — perseverance in this direction brings only misfortune (凶).
💡 The Wind's Lesson: Gentle penetration is one of nature's most powerful forces — but it has limits. Too little commitment becomes indecision (Line 1). Too much repetition becomes humiliation (Line 3). Too much submission loses everything (Line 6). The sweet spot is Lines 4 and 5: patient, purposeful, directed gentleness that yields abundant harvests and lasting transformation.
The Great Image (大象)
"隨風,巽;君子以申命行事。"
"Winds following one upon the other: the image of the Gently Penetrating. Thus the noble person spreads commands abroad and carries out undertakings."
Wind following wind — one gust reinforcing the next. This is the image of how effective communication works: not a single thunderous decree, but repeated, consistent messaging that gradually penetrates every level of an organization, a community, a relationship. The noble person (君子) takes this lesson: 申命 — to reiterate, to spread commands thoroughly — and then 行事 — to carry out undertakings.
The deeper wisdom: great execution comes from great communication. Like wind that reaches into every corner, the leader's intent must permeate every level. One announcement is not enough — the message must be repeated, reinforced, and lived until it becomes as natural and pervasive as the wind itself.
Modern Application
💼 Career
Today favors soft skills over hard tactics. Persuade through reasoning, not demands. Build consensus through patient dialogue. Your influence grows not by grabbing power but by making yourself indispensable through quiet competence. The gentle approach opens doors that force cannot.
💰 Finance
Slow, steady accumulation over dramatic moves. Drip investing, compound interest, incremental savings — the wind's way of building wealth. Avoid aggressive speculation. Like wind eroding rock, small consistent actions create lasting financial change.
❤️ Relationships
Use tenderness and patience to reach your partner's heart. Grand gestures matter less than consistent warmth, attentive listening, and gentle presence. If single, let attraction build naturally — be a warm breeze, not a storm. The person who slowly becomes part of someone's daily comfort wins deeper affection than any dramatic suitor.
🧘 Personal Growth
Cultivate inner flexibility. Like a tree that bends with the wind but does not break, practice yielding without losing your center. Meditation, tai chi, and mindful breathing all embody Xùn energy. The gentlest force in the universe is the one that shapes your character: persistent, quiet, daily practice.
