豐 Fēng — Abundance
Thunder over Fire · The Midday Sun · 雷電皆至,豐
Fēng (豐) is the hexagram of supreme abundance — the midsummer noon when thunder rolls and lightning blazes across a sky of blinding brilliance. Everything is at its fullest, loudest, most magnificent. It represents peak achievement, overflowing prosperity, and the dazzling zenith of power. But embedded in every sentence is a solemn reminder: the sun at noon can only descend. To receive Fēng is to be told: "This is your moment of fullness — seize it, share it, but know it will not last forever."

The Judgment (卦辭)
"豐:亨,王假之,勿憂,宜日中。"
Abundance has success. The king attains fullness. Be not sad. Be like the sun at midday.
The judgment of Fēng contains one of the I Ching's most memorable images: 宜日中 — "be like the sun at midday." This is both an instruction and a warning. The midday sun illuminates everything with maximum clarity, but it is also the precise moment after which light begins to fade. The four phrases reveal the full teaching:
Fēng
Abundance · Fullness · Prosperity
Everything is overflowing. Resources, energy, recognition — all at their peak. In action: embrace the fullness.
Hēng
Success · Smooth Progress
The time is favorable. Actions bear fruit. All doors are open. In action: move decisively.
Wù Yōu
Do Not Worry · Be Not Sad
Even knowing fullness must wane, do not let anxiety steal the moment. In action: enjoy without fear.
Yí Rì Zhōng
Be Like the Sun at Noon
Shine at maximum brilliance — illuminate everything, hide nothing. In action: radiate fully while you can.
💡 Key Insight: The genius of Fēng is its dual message: celebrate abundance and prepare for its passing. The king who "attains fullness" (王假之) does not hoard — he shares, distributes, and creates lasting structures. The sun does not worry about setting; it simply shines with everything it has. Do the same.
The Sun's Arc: Line Statements (爻辭)
The six lines of Fēng tell a story of light and shadow. The recurring motif is the sun being obscured by screens and curtains (蔀, 沛) — abundance that creates its own obstacles, brilliance that generates its own darkness. Each line explores a different face of this paradox.
遇其配主,雖旬無咎,往有尚。
He meets his lord and partner. Though they are of equal rank for ten days, no blame. Going forward brings recognition.
At the beginning of abundance, you encounter someone who is your equal and complement (配主). Thunder meets Fire — movement meets clarity. This partnership of equals may feel tense ("Who leads?"), but for a season (旬, ten days) this equality is productive, not threatening. Go forward together — the collaboration will be recognized and rewarded.
豐其蔀,日中見斗,往得疑疾,有孚發若,吉。
Such abundance of screens that the Pole Star is visible at noon. Going forward meets suspicion and hostility. But if one arouses trust through sincerity, good fortune comes.
Something is blocking your light. The screens (蔀) are so thick that even at high noon, you can see stars — meaning the environment has become so obstructed that clarity is lost. If you push forward blindly, you will meet suspicion (疑疾). The solution is not force but sincerity (孚). Remove the screens. Let genuine trustworthiness dispel the shadows.
豐其沛,日中見沬,折其右肱,無咎。
Such abundance of large curtains that small stars are visible at noon. He breaks his right arm. No blame.
The obstruction has deepened. Now even tiny stars (沬) are visible at midday — near-total darkness at the height of day. Worse, the right arm is broken (折其右肱) — you have lost your primary tool or key supporter. Information overload, excessive complexity, or too many competing forces have made it impossible to see clearly or act effectively. Yet there is "no blame" — this paralysis is not your fault. It is the nature of extreme abundance.
豐其蔀,日中見斗,遇其夷主,吉。
Such abundance of screens that the Pole Star is visible at noon. He meets his equal lord. Good fortune.
The screens return — but this time, in the darkness, you meet someone real (夷主, an equal lord). This is a turning point: the very obscurity that blinded you now reveals who is genuinely by your side. In the blazing noon, everyone looks like a friend. In the darkness, only the true ones remain. Meeting this person brings good fortune.
來章,有慶譽,吉。
Lines of brilliance come. There is celebration and praise. Good fortune.
After the darkness of the previous lines, light returns. 來章 — "brilliance comes" — talented people, good news, and recognition arrive of their own accord. You do not need to chase them; they are drawn to you. There is celebration (慶) and honor (譽). This is the purest expression of abundance: it flows toward you naturally because you have earned it.
豐其屋,蔀其家,闚其戶,闃其無人,三歲不覿,凶。
He makes his house so grand, screens off his household. He peeps through the gate and sees no one. For three years he sees nothing. Misfortune.
The ultimate warning of Fēng: abundance turned into isolation. The house is grand (豐其屋) but completely sealed off (蔀其家). The owner peeks through the gate — no one is there. For three years (三歲), nothing. Abundance without sharing becomes a prison. Grandeur without openness becomes a tomb. This is the fate of those who hoard their fullness, refuse to share, and wall themselves off from the world.
💡 The Sun's Lesson: Abundance is not a destination — it is a peak. Like the midday sun, it is brilliant but brief. The wise person does three things at the zenith: shine fully (do not hold back), share generously (do not hoard), and prepare wisely (do not pretend the afternoon will never come).
The Great Image (大象)
"雷電皆至,豐;君子以折獄致刑。"
"Thunder and lightning both arrive: the image of Abundance. Thus the noble person decides lawsuits and carries out punishments."
This is a surprising Great Image: in a hexagram about abundance, the noble person is called to judge cases and enforce law. Why? Because thunder (震, decisiveness) and lightning (離, clarity) together create the conditions for perfect justice. When you can both see clearly (fire/lightning) and act decisively (thunder), that is the time to settle difficult matters.
The deeper teaching: the time of abundance is the time to set things right. When resources, energy, and clarity are at their peak, use them to resolve long-standing disputes, correct injustices, and establish order. Do not squander fullness on luxury alone — use it to build lasting fairness.
Modern Application
💼 Career
You are at a career high point. Results are visible, recognition is flowing, and your influence is at its peak. Act decisively now — push through the initiatives that matter most. But also begin mentoring successors and documenting knowledge. Peaks do not last.
💰 Finance
A harvest season. Income is strong and returns are generous. Enjoy the abundance — but remember 盛極必衰 (what peaks must decline). Save aggressively during the boom. The wisest move at the top is to secure the downside.
❤️ Relationships
Love is at its most intense and passionate. Both partners are pouring energy into the relationship. Cherish this period — it is the kind of time you will look back on with warmth. But do not let intensity burn into jealousy or possession. Let love be like the sun: bright, warm, freely given.
🧘 Personal Growth
Energy is at maximum. You feel powerful, vibrant, unstoppable. Channel this into bold action and generous giving. But watch for excess yang — stay hydrated (literally and metaphorically). Balance intensity with moments of stillness.
