革 Gé — Revolution
Lake over Fire · Transformation · 君子以治歷明時
Ge (革) is the 49th hexagram in the I Ching — fire burning beneath the lake, two elemental forces in fundamental conflict that can only be resolved through transformation. It represents revolution, renewal, the abolition of the old, and the establishment of the new. To receive Ge is to be told that the old order has run its course — change is not merely possible, it is necessary and inevitable.
Hexagram Structure
革 Gé
Upper Trigram: ☱ Dui (Lake / Marsh)
Lower Trigram: ☲ Li (Fire / Clarity)
Element: Lake over Fire
Season: Autumn (harvest of the old, sowing of the new)
Image: Fire in the lake — irreconcilable forces demanding change
Nature: Conflict resolved through transformation
Quality: Reform, courage, decisive action
The Judgment (卦辭)
"革:己日乃孚,元亨利貞,悔亡。"
Revolution: On your own day you are believed. Sublime success. Perseverance furthers. Remorse disappears.
The judgment teaches that revolution succeeds only when the time is right and trust has been earned. "己日乃孚" — only after the proper day (己日) arrives will people believe (孚). Premature revolution fails; timely revolution achieves sublime success.
Timing
The Right Moment
Revolution must wait for its proper day. Act too early and you will be opposed. Wait until conditions are ripe.
Trust
Belief Through Sincerity
People must believe in the change. Trust is earned, not demanded. Build consensus before acting.
Success
Sublime Achievement
When timing and trust align, the revolution achieves supreme, fundamental success.
No Regret
Remorse Disappears
The pain of change is real, but it fades. A righteous revolution leaves no lasting regret.
💡 Key Insight: Ge does not endorse reckless upheaval. It sanctions revolution only when: (1) the old order has genuinely failed, (2) the time is right, (3) the people trust the reformer, and (4) the motivation is righteous. Without these conditions, change becomes chaos.
The Six Lines: Line Statements (爻辭)
The six lines of Ge trace the complete arc of a revolution — from premature restraint, through building consensus, to the dramatic transformation of the tiger and leopard. Each line teaches when and how to change.
鞏用黃牛之革
Bound with the hide of a yellow cow. Hold fast.
The impulse to change is strong, but the time is not yet ripe. Bind yourself with the tough hide of a yellow cow — the color yellow represents the center and moderation, the cowhide represents firm self-restraint. Do not act prematurely.
己日乃革之,征吉,無咎
When your own day comes, then make the revolution. Undertaking brings good fortune. No blame.
The proper moment has arrived. Preparations are complete, trust has been established, and the mandate for change is clear. Now is the time to act. Launch the revolution with confidence — good fortune awaits.
征凶,貞厲,革言三就,有孚
Starting forth brings misfortune. Perseverance brings danger. When talk of revolution has gone around three times, one may commit, and others will trust.
A critical warning: even when the need for change is obvious, rushing forward without consensus is dangerous. The revolution must be discussed "three times" — meaning thoroughly debated until all parties agree. Only then will people truly believe (有孚).
悔亡,有孚改命,吉
Remorse disappears. People trust. Changing the mandate brings good fortune.
The revolution now has moral authority. The people believe in the cause, and the change of mandate (改命) is blessed with good fortune. This is the turning point — the old regime has lost legitimacy, and the new order carries the trust of the people. Motivation must be pure.
大人虎變,未占有孚
The great person changes like a tiger. Even before divination, they are believed.
This is the zenith of revolution. The great leader transforms with the magnificent clarity of a tiger's stripes — bold, unmistakable, awe-inspiring. The change is so visibly right that people believe without needing proof. This is the mark of a true revolutionary: the transformation speaks for itself.
君子豹變,小人革面,征凶,居貞吉
The noble person changes like a leopard. The petty person merely changes their face. Setting forth brings misfortune. Remaining steadfast brings good fortune.
The major revolution is complete. What remains is fine-tuning and consolidation. The noble person refines their changes with the elegant subtlety of a leopard's spots — smaller, more detailed adjustments. The petty person, however, only changes on the surface (革面). Now is the time to stop pushing and start stabilizing.
💡 The Revolution's Lesson: True revolution follows a precise rhythm: restraint → preparation → consensus → moral mandate → bold transformation → refined consolidation. Skip any step and the revolution fails. The tiger and the leopard teach us: first the dramatic leap (虎變), then the elegant refinement (豹變). Know when to roar and when to purr.
The Great Image (大象)
"澤中有火,革;君子以治歷明時。"
"Fire in the lake: the image of Revolution. Thus the noble person sets the calendar in order and makes the seasons clear."
Fire and water (lake) are elemental opposites — when fire burns beneath the lake, the two forces struggle against each other. This irreconcilable conflict is the engine of transformation. The old must give way to the new, just as one season must yield to the next.
The noble person (君子) learns from this that change follows natural laws. "治歷明時" — setting the calendar in order and clarifying the seasons — means understanding that there is a right time for every change. Revolution is not chaos; it is the recognition that the old season has ended and a new one has begun. The word 革 itself originally meant "animal skin" or "hide" — the shedding of an old skin to reveal new growth beneath.
Modern Application
💼 Career
Ge signals that the old way of working has run its course. A career pivot, a new role, or a radical change in approach is favored — but only if you've built consensus and the timing is right. Don't burn bridges; transform them.
💰 Finance
Old income streams may be drying up, but new financial opportunities are opening. Those who dare to transform their approach will find gold. The key is courage combined with careful timing — not reckless speculation.
❤️ Relationships
Some old patterns in your relationship need to be broken. The way you've always communicated, the roles you've always played — it's time for an upgrade. Change is not the enemy of love; stagnation is.
🧘 Personal Growth
This is a time for radical self-reinvention. Shed the old skin. Change your habits, your social circles, your way of thinking. Be the tiger — let your transformation be bold and unmistakable. But know when to stop and be the leopard.
